Most people immediately say absolutely not. I would never do that, we tell ourselves. Yet, a famous 1961 psychology study proved otherwise. Consequently, it completely changed how we view human nature.

Stanley Milgram, a young psychologist, wanted to understand how ordinary citizens could participate in the horrors of the Holocaust. Therefore, he set up a behavioral experiment to test the limits of human obedience. What he found shook the scientific world to its core.

In July 1961, Stanley Milgram began his research at Yale University. Interestingly, this was just three months after the trial of notorious Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann. Milgram wondered if Eichmann and his accomplices were purely evil, or if they were just blindly following orders.

To test this, he recruited 40 men from the local town through a simple newspaper ad. Furthermore, he paid them $4.50 (roughly $45 in today’s money) just for showing up.

However, he lied to them.

The volunteers were told they were participating in a harmless study about memory and learning. Specifically, they thought they were testing whether punishment helps people remember facts better.

The Setup

When a participant arrived at the lab, they met two other people. First, there was the “Experimenter,” a stern man wearing a gray lab coat. Secondly, there was the “Learner,” an affable, middle-aged accountant named Mr. Wallace.

Unbeknownst to the real participant, both the Experimenter and the Learner were actors.

They drew slips of paper to decide their roles, but the draw was rigged. Consequently, the real volunteer was always assigned the role of the “Teacher”.

Next, the Teacher watched as the Learner was strapped into a chair and attached to electrodes. The Teacher then sat in an adjacent room in front of a massive, terrifying-looking shock generator. Naturally, this machine featured a row of 30 switches. The labels started at a mild 15 volts (“Slight Shock”) and climbed all the way to 450 volts, ominously marked “XXX”.

The Teacher’s job was straightforward. They read a list of word pairs over a microphone. If the Learner answered incorrectly, the Teacher had to flip a switch and deliver an electric shock. Furthermore, with every wrong answer, the voltage increased by 15 volts.

There was just one catch. The shocks were entirely fake. The Learner was purposefully giving wrong answers and playing pre-recorded sounds of screaming.

Before the experiment even started, Milgram asked a group of psychology experts to predict the Milgram experiment results. They confidently guessed that only 1% to 3% of people would push the final 450-volt switch.

They were dead wrong.

In reality, a staggering 65% of participants (26 out of 40) cranked the dial to the maximum 450 volts. Even more surprising, every single participant went up to at least 300 volts.

At 150 volts, the actor in the other room started shouting about his heart condition. At 300 volts, he pounded desperately on the wall. Eventually, he fell completely silent, implying he was unconscious — or worse.

Did the Teachers feel bad? Absolutely.

They were not acting like sadistic villains. Instead, they sweated profusely, stuttered, bit their lips, and dug their fingernails into their own skin. Many burst into uncontrollable, nervous laughter. They repeatedly begged the Experimenter to stop the test.

Meanwhile, the Experimenter simply responded with four strict, pre-scripted prods:

  1. “Please continue.”
  2. “The experiment requires that you continue.”
  3. “It is absolutely essential that you continue.”
  4. “You have no other choice, you must go on.”

Faced with these calm but firm commands, the majority of people caved. They pulled the switches.

Why did so many people obey authority?

Let’s pause for a second. Why on earth did normal, everyday folks inflict pain on a stranger? Exploring the psychology of obedience to authority helps us understand this dark reality.

Milgram identified several key psychological traps that pushed people over the edge.

1. The legitimacy of authority

Yale University is a highly respected institution. Furthermore, the Experimenter wore a lab coat, which practically screams “science and safety.” When people perceive an authority figure as legitimate and knowledgeable, they naturally defer to them. In fact, when Milgram later moved the experiment to a run-down office building, obedience dropped to 47%.

2. Passing the buck (Diffusion of Responsibility)

When participants hesitated, they often asked, “Who is responsible if this man gets hurt?” The Experimenter calmly replied, “I take full responsibility.” Immediately, you could see the visible relief on the Teacher’s face. Ultimately, when we feel like someone else is carrying the blame, our personal moral compass often switches off. Milgram called this the Agentic State — a mindset where you see yourself merely as an agent carrying out someone else’s wishes.

3. The slippery slope

The shock increments were tiny. Going from 15 volts to 30 volts is barely a step up. Naturally, participants rationalized their behavior. If I gave 45 volts, why not 60? By the time they reached 150 volts, they were already in too deep. This psychological phenomenon makes it incredibly hard to suddenly draw a hard line and rebel.

Here is where the story gets really messy. Today, the Milgram obedience study ethics are widely considered a textbook example of what not to do in psychology research.

When the study was published in 1963, it sparked massive outrage. Diana Baumrind, a prominent clinical psychologist, famously blasted Milgram in 1964. She argued that the experiment caused severe, unnecessary emotional trauma.

Let’s look at the major ethical red flags:

  • Lack of Informed Consent: You cannot agree to something if you are being lied to. Participants thought they were helping with a memory test, not being tested on their own morality.
  • The Right to Withdraw: Modern research dictates that you can walk away from an experiment at any time. However, the Experimenter’s rigid prods (“You have no other choice”) made participants feel utterly trapped.
  • Extreme Psychological Distress: People genuinely believed they might have killed an innocent accountant. Exposing volunteers to that level of guilt and panic is highly irresponsible.

In his own defense, Milgram pointed out that he fully debriefed everyone afterward. He introduced them to a very much alive Mr. Wallace. Moreover, Milgram surveyed the volunteers a year later. Surprisingly, 84% said they were “glad” or “very glad” they had participated. Only 1% expressed regret.

Despite this defense, the controversy changed science forever. As a direct result of Milgram’s work, universities established Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). Nowadays, researchers must prioritize human welfare, obtain fully informed consent, and absolutely avoid psychological harm.

Can we replicate the milgram experiment today?

Because of strict modern ethics, a true 100% replication of the Stanley Milgram shock experiment is illegal.

However, in 2009, researcher Jerry Burger conducted an ingenious partial replication. He added massive safety nets to protect the participants’ mental health. For instance, he screened out anyone with a history of anxiety. More importantly, he stopped the experiment at 150 volts — the exact moment the actor first demands to be released.

So, did modern society perform any better?

Not really. Burger’s findings were statistically almost identical to Milgram’s 1961 results. Despite decades of history, civil rights movements, and cultural shifts, human nature hasn’t magically changed. Ordinary folks are still overwhelmingly likely to obey authority figures.

Real-world lessons for today

Why does a 60-year-old experiment still matter right now?

Look closely at modern society. From corporate fraud and toxic workplace cultures to devastating military conflicts, the excuse is often exactly the same: “I was just following orders.”

The Milgram experiment proves that evil isn’t always committed by monsters. Sadly, it is frequently carried out by regular people who simply lack the courage to stand up to a boss, a manager, or a politician.

We are socially conditioned to respect uniforms, titles, and institutions. Consequently, it takes active, conscious effort to question the rules.

If this study teaches us anything, it is that blind obedience is dangerous. When an order conflicts with your basic human decency, you always have the choice to stop pulling the switch.
